Avowed Will Not Target 60fps on Xbox Series X/S, Sparking Debate on Performance Standards
Obsidian has announced that Avowed will not operate at 60fps on Xbox Series X/S. The terms "30fps," "performance," and "Xbox Series" have become increasingly common discussions with each new title released on Microsoft's latest consoles. Titles like Starfield, Redfall, and the latest Forza Motorsport have faced backlash due to their failure to deliver 60fps at launch. Now, another anticipated game is set to encounter similar criticism, as it has been confirmed that it will also not achieve this frame rate that many believe should be standard: Avowed, developed by Obsidian Entertainment.
This forthcoming title is described as a first-person single-player fantasy RPG. The game's art director, Matt Hansen, expressed on the Iron Lords podcast that there is no pressing need for the game to run at 60fps. He argued that for a single-player experience, the 30fps limit works well for both players and developers alike.
It’s hard not to consider the various features and components that the Xbox Series X boasts but are seldom utilized in its titles, contributing to the overall price of the console.
What are your thoughts on Avowed opting out of 60fps on consoles and justifying this choice as a matter of design?
